Illinois vs. Mizzery

Illini Game Preview
Tonight – 8:30 tip
Meet me at Rebel!

Why Bruce Weber Should Read the New Yorker

While Georgia’s upset victory over the Illini Saturday was not David over Goliath, it was improbable. Georgia was 4-4 going into Saturday with losses to Wofford, UAB, and St. John's. They were picked to finish last in a mediocre SEC. And, they took a 34 point a$$ whupping courtesy of the Illini only a year ago. So how exactly does Georgia beat Illinois? Ask Malcolm Gladwell. The popular Economist who wrote Blink, The Tipping Point, and Outliers also wrote an amazing article for the New Yorker on this very topic.

The gist of the article: if you are the underdog, don’t play straight up. Do something different, surprise your opponent. Gladwell cites research from political Scientist Ivan ArreguĂn-Toft in making his point. Toft analyzed every war fought in the last 200 years and found that the superior army won 71.5% of the time. Digging deeper, Toft looked at conflicts where one side was at least ten times more powerful than the other and found that when the underdog used an unconventional strategy, its winning percentage jumped to 63.6%. If Georgia had played the Illini straight up, they would have lost by 15 points. Instead, Georgia switched from press to zone to man and didn’t let the Illini get into a rhythm. David beat Goliath.

From here on out, Illinois will be assuming the role of David. We must acknowledge our weaknesses and use unorthodox strategies to compensate. Our rebounding and post defense is soft, so we should double and triple the post, put opposing big men in foul trouble, and bring in subs to hack, push, and punish the other team’s center. Our team defense is also struggling, so why not use the press that was so effective at the end of the Georgia game and against Clemson. Let’s change it up just like Georgia and keep the Big10 guessing.

Coach Weber or IGP readers, if you are interested in reading more about Gladwell’s theories about the underdog (and the full court press), check out the article online (http://www.newyorker.com/reporting/2009/05/11/090511fa_fact_gladwell). It’s a bit long but well worth the read.

Mizzery

If the Illini had any trouble getting up for Saturday’s game against Georgia, there won’t be a lack of adrenaline during tonight's match-up versus bitter rival Missouri Tigers. Illinois is going for their 10th straight win in the series. Mizzery’s best player is 6’6” swingman Kim English. English scores 16.1ppg and trained over the summer with former Illini point guard Chester Frazier who is also from Maryland. Fortunately, Mizzery’s front line is almost as frail as the Illini. Take a peek at this story about string bean freshmen John Underwood - http://www.columbiamissourian.com/stories/2009/12/22/missouri-mens-basketball-forward-gains-weight-compete/. Underwood is 6’9” and weighs 190lbs. I could replace his name with Tisdale’s and no one would know the difference.

Missouri likes to press so it won’t be good enough to just beat the press, we have to score off the press and make them pay for being over aggressive. Look for our freshmen guards to feed off the intensity of the evening and light up St. Louis. DJ and Brandon, I want 30pts and 5 steals between the two of you.

Illinois – 76
Missouri – 68

Illinois vs. The Comodore 64s

Illini Game Preview
Tonight - 7:30 tip
We're headed to the Schoolyard. Shoot me an email, or leave a comment below if you're going to make it.

What an amazing comeback last week against Clemson. Down 23 points in the first half, Illinois made a furious comeback to win in the final minute of the Big10-ACC match-up. Our young team showed tremendous heart, and it ranks right up there with the Arizona Elite 8 game, last year’s Northwestern comeback, and a similar early season 20 point comeback against Seton Hall in 2000.

I love the heart emanating from this year’s team, but I’m a little concerned about the defense. During Bruce Weber’s reign as head coach, Illini teams have gained a reputation for hard-nosed, man-to-man defense. This season, our defensive statistics are pretty poor…especially when considering the level of competition.

Opposing teams are scoring a lot of points against us, they’re shooting pretty well, and we aren’t getting nearly as many steals as we should with all our guards. I see 3 areas where teams are taking advantage of the Illini.

1. Post Defense: Our big men aren’t the thickest trees in the forest, and sometimes it shows in our post defense. Junior Forward Mike Davis tends to put both hands straight in the air - making him tall…but not very wide. Davis needs to get low and wide and utilize the ‘arm bar’. NBA guards in the 80’s and 90’s utilized the hand check to slow down and steer their man in the direction they wanted. The arm bar is a similar technique where a big man will put his forearm and hip into the side of the offensive player. See Dennis Rodman for the arm-bar and textbook post defense.

2. On the Ball Defense: Opposing teams are getting to the rim way to easy. Boise State had 16 layups on Saturday. We have a lot of young players who are not used to the speed of D1 hoops.

3. Defense Against the Pick & Roll. Our big men are taught to hedge against screens and recover to their man. When we use a heavy hedge, it leaves our team vulnerable against ball reversals. We have to improve our defensive rotations after the roll. Team defense.

Coach Weber saw the same things against Clemson and switched to zone in the 2nd half to keep Clemson on their toes. Surprising? Yes. Especially when you consider that Assistant Coach Jay Price could only think of 2.5 possessions in the last seven years that the Illini played zone. In the NFL, defenses switch their looks and formations each play to confuse the offense. I’d love to see Illinois use a few different zones sporadically as a change of pace.

My second adjustment? Press. In two of the four comebacks mentioned earlier (Arizona and Northwestern), Illinois utilized a tight press to make up a ton of ground. Even in last year’s disappointing tournament loss to Western Kentucky, we were down 17 with five minutes, but utilized full court pressure to get within 4 at the final buzzer. We’ve got the guards and the speed, so lets throw it out there for 3-4 minutes a game.

Vanderbilt

Illinois topped the Commodores 69-63 in last year’s contest, but Vandy returns all starters in 2009. Watch the match-up between Vandy’s 6’11’ Center AJ Ogilvy and Illini big man Mike Tisdale. Ogilvy is scoring 14ppg and pulling down 7 boards a contest.

Illini Guard Demetri McCamey came up big last year with 23 points on five 3-pointers. Interesting Fact: Clemson went on a 23-4 run after McCamey picked up his 3rd foul last Wednesday. McCamey, like another brilliant former guard named Frank Williams, gets unfairly blamed for too many of Illinois’ basketball problems. McCamey is our best player, he played amazing on Saturday, and I expect him to continue to be the engine that makes this team run.

Illinois – 81
Commodore 64s – 75

Illinois vs. the Ligers

Illini Game Preview
6:15 tip off @ Clemson
I'll be in class, but a few folks are headed to The Pony on Belmont.

One of my favorite parts of college sports is getting a group of new players to cheer for every year. This year, we have 4 new Illini. Let me introduce them to you:

#1 - DJ Richardson: DJ is the most highly touted of the freshmen, and so far his defense and leadership skills earned the most praise from Head Coach Bruce Weber. Richardson is averaging 9.5 ppg during the first 6 games of the season but only scored 3 and 5 in losses to Utah and Bradley.

#2 - Brandon Paul: Sporting a loud faux hawk and a quiet on court demeanor, Paul has been my favorite newcomer in the early going. Aside from the fact that Paul's father was the police liaison where my mom taught, Paul attacks the front of the rim with an aggression we have not seen at Illinois since the likes of Kenny Battle. Paul has a scorer's mentality, and can get hot from anywhere on the court.

#3 - Joseph Bertrand: Hailing from Sterling, IL, Bertrand won the state of Illinois high school dunk contest last year. I cannot wait to see him start running the floor and rising above the rim. Unfortunately, Bertrand had arthroscopic knee surgery in mid-November and will not return to practice until later this week.

#42 - Tyler Griffey: Griffey is the lone big man of the class of 2013 (that makes me feel old...by the way, these guys were born in the 90's), and at 6-8 225, he already outweighs Junior Forward Mike Davis. Griffey has a strong mid-range game and should play a few minutes a game spelling the Mike's.

You never know what you are going to get with freshmen. I fully expect us to lose some games we should win (see Utah/Bradley) and win some games we should lose. Either way, the expectations are high for this talented group, and it will be great fun getting to know them better.

Taking on the Ligers

Oh man, do I love Thanksgiving! I have a November tradition of visiting Lou Mitchell's 1 week before Thanksgiving to take on their turkey dinner as a warm up for the big day. This year, we celebrated Thanksgiving at my parents’ house. Mom, you outdid yourself - delicious.

My uncle went to Illinois and we talk a lot of Illini basketball. "Mike, how are the Illini going to be this year?"

High on an overdose of tryptophan, I took inspiration from the meal in front of me. "Steve, for the rest of the season, I want you to equate success to the food on this dining room table. On their own, they are a collection of dishes, but together, they make the best meal of every year.

"You see that beautiful bird over there. The turkey is the centerpiece. For the Illini, the metaphoric turkey is our returning starters: point guard Demetri McCamey, Davis, and Tisdale. If our veteran leaders can combine for 40 points or more, the odds are in our favor to pull out the W.

"Toots, (Yes, I have a cousin we call Toots. Her real name is Shirley.) potatoes please. This is Senior Forward Dominique Keller. He brings it every night, and he scores in unorthodox ways. Mashed, baked, fried, it doesn’t matter because it tastes so good.

"Now pass me the stuffing. Comfort food. What makes you feel more comfortable than when the announcer talks about a shooting guard named Jordan. Jeffrey is no Michael, but I like the defense he played at the end of last year, and he can give some solid minutes when we need a stop."

"Dad, it's time for some cranberries and gravy. The toppers...adding a little acid and a little base. These are the freshmen, Paul (cranberries) and Richardson (gravy). You never know how they're going to come out, but they can really make this meal hum."

"Let's not forget some corn or the green bean casse-role players: Semaru, Griffey, and Junior Guard Alex Legion. I really hope Legion can graduate into gravy or stuffing, but he hasn’t shown it yet."

"Mike, that's a lot of food."

"No Steve, this is a masterpiece that delivers the kind of delicate balance that we will need to win against Clemson. It's basketball season, and my mouth is watering."

Illinois - 73
Ligers - 71

IGP Tournament Preview

Part I

Do you remember the 2005 Illinois vs. Arizona Elite 8 game? Do you remember the frustration you felt when the Illini were down 12 with 6 minutes left? Or the terror in your gut when the deficit increased to 15 with only 4 minutes on the clock? How were we going to come back? Was it even possible? Then a ray of hope; we cut it to 7 - a minute 20 remaining. Was it possible? Then, in the blink of an eye, a Deron Williams 3 pointer sends the game to overtime - goosebumps. In overtime Luther Head hits a breakaway lay-up to go ahead, the comeback is complete. MAYHEM.

I watched the 2005 Illini-Zona game on the Big10 Network last night (thanks AC). I still got scared when we were down late, and I still cheered after every bucket. But I also realized that this game represents everything that is great about the NCAA Tournament.

March Madness is here.

The Big Ten Tournament

Complements to Indianapolis, Conseco Field House, and the Big Ten Tournament last weekend. I headed out there for a bachelor party, and we watched the 7 different games. Before getting to the meat and potatoes of the IGP Tourney Edition, I'd like to share some of my observations.
  • MSU Head Coach Tom Izzo doesn't make any substitutions. While Izzo is coaching the game on the floor, his assistants actually make all the subs.

  • It's easy to sit in the front row at the Big10 or NCAA Tournament. On Saturday, after MSU lost to OSU, Ryback and I walked down from the nosebleeds and scored front row seats (some of you saw us on TV). After MSU lost, we stood outside the fan section and as fans left we asked, "Are you sticking around for the 2nd game? Can I have your ticket stub?" The 5th person I talked to handed over 2 golden ticket stubs.

  • Goran Sutan's parents are tall. After Illinois fell behind 10, I glanced at the guy sitting 2 seats to my left. He shrugged his shoulders as if to say, "It's going to be a long game son." Then his wife said in a thick Eastern European accent, "Vy don't ze just pound de bowl inside?" "I must be sitting next to Goran Sutan's parents," I thought. Sure enough, when they got up to leave at half time, mom was 5'10" and dad was about 6'5" and wearing a pin with Goran's picture. They gave us their ticket stubs before they left.

  • PSU got robbed. They finished tied with Wisky and ahead of Minnesota and Michigan, yet didn't make the tournament. You can bet that they will be scheduleing a tougher pre-conference schedule next year.

The Big Show

The brackets are due before tip-off tomorrow. So here are a few tips to guide you through the field of 64.

Illinois - We drew the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers in round 1. Ding Ding. Let's go. The Hilltoppers started the season 7-5 and finished 24-8. At 14-3 in their last 17 games, they are hot. They even knocked off #1 seed Louisville back in November. Four players score in double figures for the Hilltoppers, but their front line is undersized. Their top rebounder is 6'5" and their center is 6'9", 190lbs.

Illinois - 67

Hilltoppers - 58

All the bracketologists, upsetologists, and even proctologists are picking the Hilltoppers in an upset. If you are thinking about listening to these "experts", I want you to listen to me first. Illinois will not lose. Next, listen to the best odds maker in the world - Vegas. Illinois is favored by 5 points in this contest. Follow your heart.

Who's Hot - Take a look at which teams ended the season hot (except the Hilltoppers) - ride them a few games. Purdue (Final Four), Syracuse (Elite 8), USC (upset BC), and Memphis (Elite 8) all finished the season strong. I was extremely impressed watching Purdue roll through the Big Ten Tournament. With Robbie Hummel healthy, Purdue is looking like the team everyone expected at the start of the year. JaJuan Johnson is impressively athletic down low; Chris Kramer can defend and threw down a nasty dunk in the first half vs. PSU; and Lewis Jackson is a speedy point guard who can drive and dish. I have Purdue in my Final Four.

Top Dawgs with Experience - Davidson should have been entered into the NCAAs just so we could see Stephon Curry again. Who will be this year's Curry? Syracuse Sophomore Eric Devendorf is a thug (suspended earlier for domestic violence), but he is a gunner in the form of Jerry McNamara. You saw him almost close out UConn in overtime number...I don't know, there were so many. Scottie Reynolds from Villanova is another guy who can score. He put up 22 ppg in wins against Notre Dame, Providence, and Marquette during the Big East tournament (he went on to score 2 points in the final - yikes). Speaking of Marquette, Chicago product Jerel McNeal averaged 19.7 ppg in the Big East. Dude can play.

Fat Point Guards - Fat point guards tend to do very well in the NCAA tournament. Khalid El-Amin and Mateen Cleeves both won National Championships while carrying a little extra baby fat. This year, Levance Fields is your chubby point guard of choice. Averaging 7.6 assists a game, Fields is like a truck barreling into the lane. I have Pitt in the National Championship.

I hate the Midwest Bracket - To me, Louisville is overrated as the overall number 1. They only lost 5 games this year, but 1 of them was to the Hilltoppers and another was a 33 point a$$ whupping by a miserable Notre Dame team. They had some close games this year, and I think they are ripe for an upset. The only problem is that I hate every other team in their bracket. MSU didn't impress me last weekend, and I absolutely hate Kansas. Could Wake do it? Probably not. Maybe WVU, but they have to get by Dayton. This bracket is a tough one to call. I got nothing.

There you have it. I am so ready for tomorrow!

Sincerely,

Cinderella

Illinois vs. the Curse of Ed DeChellis

Illini Game Preview
Tonight @ PSU

The Golden Netter's

It's March. And March is quite possibly the best month of the year. All the great hoops we've been watching will culminate with the greatest sporting event (and drinking event) in all the world...the NCAA Tournament (and St. Patrick's Day). As we wrap up the regular season, I present you with the first annual Golden Netter's - an award ceremony that looks back on the season to date.

Any good award show starts off with a monologue, so to honor both college basketball and St. Patrick's Day, I wrote a limerick.

March is such a wondrous time of the year.
When the Illini play their last game I shed a tear.
I hope we can score,
And play a bunch more
If not, we'll sit, watch hoops, and drink beer.

And now the awards...

Golden Netter All Big Ten Team
Kalin Lucas
Talor Battle
Evan Turner
Manny Harris
JaJuan Johnson

You're probably surprised that there are no Illini on my All Big Ten Team. This is not a shot at our squad, but more of a testament to the fact that we have overachieved all year long.

Golden Netter Coach of the Year
Pat Knight

Why not Oklahoma's Jeff Capel, Clemson's Oliver Purnell, or even our very own Bruce Weber? Motivational technique...that's why. Pat Knight is the offspring of a man who once choked a player and hurled chairs onto the floor to inspire his team; so it's in his genes. With his team down by a basket early, Knight brought a 12 year old fan into the center of the Red Raiders huddle and asked him if he could hit a lay-up. When the young man answered, "yes", Knight laughed maniacally and said that he was a better ball player than some of the guys on his team. Crazy, I know, but it worked. The Texas Tech Red Raiders were able to coast to a 69-55 victory over Stephen F. Austin. Look out Matt Foley.

Golden Netter's Coach Most Likely to Appear in a KFC Commercial
Rick Pitino

Caption: What? Did you just call me Colonel Sanders?

Golden Netter Half Court Shot of the Year
During halftime of a recent Maryland game, one fan took a 1/2 court shot blindfolded for $500,000. After the shot, the fans erupted and the poor fella thought he won a cool half million. Unfortunately, it was all a prank set up by his friend. Check it out on the College Humor website - http://www.collegehumor.com/video:1902812. Apparently, this is the latest in an ongoing prank war. In a previous prank, Amir (who took the half-court shot) set up his friend (Tweety) by purchasing time on the Yankee's scoreboard for an in game proposal for the clueless Tweety and his then girlfriend. Tweety's girlfriend was not happy when she found out that the couple was set up.

The Curse of Ed DeChillis

There are 2 reasons why the Penn State Nittany Lions have defeated the Illini 3 straight times: Big Ten Golden Netter Award Winner Talor Battle and a Head Coach with a name so grand that it has 3 capitalized letters - Ed DeChellis. Both these guys are bonified Illini killers. Battle is almost as fast as Kalin Lucas, and the Illini had all sorts of problems with Lucas on Sunday. Battle is going to get to the front of the rim no matter who Illinois throws at him. The key will be for the Illini big men to check Battle and make sure he doesn't get any freebies.

DeChellis has the Illini's number number right now. He drew up a defense that held the Illini to 33 points in their last meeting. Given how tough PSU was, I took a peak at their scores throughout the season. They allow 62 points a game (7th in the Big Ten) and only two teams have not scored more than 50 points on PSU this year - Illinois 33 and Army 45 (not great company). I'll consider our 33 points a fluke. Sophomore Center Mike Tisdale was key in the 2nd half rally on Sunday, and he'll have a big time height advantage over PSU's undersized front court. It's always tough to win on the road on senior night - we should have another fight on our hands tonight.

Illinois - 60
Ed Dechillis - 54

Sincerely,
March

Illinois vs. the Lophers

Illini Game Preview
Tonight vs. Minny

IGPs have been few and far between in the month of February. I am sorry for that loyal readers, but I've been travelling a bunch for work and school is kicking my ass. But do not worry, I've kept my eye on the Big10 Network and my ears open to everything except Dick Vitale's bogus ramblings collecting material for when I get a spare moment.

Last weekend (post PSU and pre-OSU), after playing some pick up basketball at the Moody Bible Institute (the same court where Dee Brown broke his leg before his senior year and was forced to return to school), a few friends engaged me in one of my favorite discussion topics...Illini Hoops.

"Man, we suck. 33 points?! Weber did not have his team ready to play," said one Illini alum.
"Yeah, not a single one of these guys would start on the 04, 05, or 06 team. We are so over rated," exclaimed another Illini Alum.

Ooompfh. It felt like someone had disparaged my mother, soiled the Nett family name, or blasphemed Michael Jordan by claiming that he cheated on his wife. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. I will not name these lost Illini souls because I hope they will find their ways home.

So this is my invite. This is me being mother bird and cucawing my fallen Illini friends back to the nest. Come home friends. Here's why...

Why I love the '08-'09 Illini

  • Chester...A quote from an NBA scout, "The test for whether you can make the NBA is if you can score on Chester Frazier."
  • Heart...The Northwestern Game. We were down 14 with 6 minutes left!
  • Chemistry...We have assists on 71% of all baskets - #1 in the nation.
  • Da Coach...We have the '08-'09 Big10 Coach of the Year. We were 16-19 last year!
  • Mid-Range J...Mike Davis, Mike Tisdale, and Calvin Brock all have great pull up jumpers. Davis was exceptional against tOSU on Sunday.
  • Charity... 71% this season vs. 62% LY
  • Jerrance Howard. He's excitable, he's a great recruiter, and he has almost as much style as Wayne McClain.
  • Defense...Teams are averaging a mere 56pts a game against us - 3rd lowest in the country.
  • 1,000 points...Don't look now, but Trent Meachum is 4 baskets shy of scoring 1,000 points in his collegiate career. Not bad for a walk-on that many thought could not hack it as a starter.

College basketball has been crazy this year. Number 1 Pittsburgh was just knocked off by a mediocre, unranked Providence team (Providence was leading by 20 in the 2nd half). Oklahoma lost its last 2 games. Yes, they were without Blake Griffin, but they looked horrendous in losses to Texas and Kansas. Missouri, who we clobbered by 16 points, is ranked 8th in the country!

Folks, these Illini are overachievers and they are for real. Let's start treating them that way.

Cucaww!

Illini vs. Lophers

The Golden Gophers created a defensive template that held the Illini to only 36 points in the first meeting. PSU used a similar defense to hold Illinois to 33 last week. It's pretty simple actually, in your jersey man-to-man defense, avoid switching on picks, do not double anyone, and avoid helping out on defense. Sound simple?

Illinois scores 71% of their baskets off assists. When the opposition over rotates, or double teams, or hedges on picks, Illinois hits the open man. If you stay at home on D, Illinois only has 1 real player that can beat you consistently off the dribble - Demetri McCamey. OSU tried the exact opposite game plan on Sunday and look how that turned out. OSU's over extended zone played right into Illinois' hands because we found Davis open in the hi-post and short corner for easy baskets.

Minnesota is playing for their tournament lives right now, so they will bring the intensity. You can bet that the Illini are a bit embarrassed by the last game these teams played. It is going to be a Big10 brawl tonight, and I can't wait to see the blood and emotion being mopped off the floor during timeouts.

The quicker we can get he ball up court, the less time Minny has to set their defense. I would love to see us push the pace tonight. We need some slashing and energy from Chester Frazier, some bench energy from Calvin Brock, and our big men will have to play far more physical than they did in last contest.

Illinois - 57

Lophers - 53

Illinois vs. the Mildcats

Illini Game Preview
Tonight @ Northwestern - 8 p.m.
Meet me at the Stadium Club...in Arkansas

The Illini earned a very timely win on Sunday. After dropping 2 of the last 3 and looking miserable against Wisconsin and even worse against Minnesota, Illinois stepped up big time with an 18 point dismantling of number 12 Purdue. Sophomore Forward Mike Davis looked phenomenal against the Choo-Choo's pulling down a career high 16 rebounds. Davis was soft in losses against Minnesota and Wisconsin, but it turns out that our sweet shooting forward had an extended bout of tonsillitis and is battling Bells Palsy. I think it also helps that Weber lit a fire under his a$$.

There are 5 teams in the Big10 within a game and a half of each other. Illinois, tOSU, and PurWon't are tied for second at 7-4 and Minnesota is in 5th place at 7-5. MSU has a seemingly solid 2.5 game lead, but they're at Purdue next Tuesday and they still have to visit Champaign later this month. We're in for some fireworks as conference play is winding down. Here is how the standings look as of 2/11.

Free Throw Shooting

Throughout the year, I've been amazed by how well the Illini have been shooting free throws. Last year we lost several games down the stretch because we couldn't hit the freebies. This year, the Illini are putting games away with their proficiency at the line. Our good buddy Mark Pinsof hypothesized that the loss of Brian Randle and Shaun Pruit alone gave the Illini free throw shooting surge. We brow beat him into doing the research, and here is what he found...

We shot 62% from the line last year, and five players from last years team's free throw % have increased DRAMATICALLY:
Mike Davis up from 46.9% to 75.6% this year
McCamey up from 62.7% to 81.8% this year
Frasier up from 51.9% to 68.8% this year
Tisdale up from 63.3% to 80.0% this year
and even Meachum is up from 74.7% to 89.7% this year

So I guess all of the work on free throws in practice and the off-season has really paid off!!

Speaking of Shaun

Spitzer sent me a story the other day about Shaun Pruitt. As of Saturday, the big boy was the leading rebounder and 3rd highest scorer in a European league. Unfortunately, the article wasn't praising his great play, it was reporting that he had been cut from the team. "If you're a league's leading rebounder and third leading scorer, how do you get released? Let's ask Shaun Pruitt," wrote spitzer.

http://www.eurobasket.com/Czech-Republic/basketball.asp?NewsID=152398

"While statistically Pruitt was very impressive, a closer examination of his game showed some serious rookie-flaws that Prostejov, currently fourth in the NBL, felt they could no longer deal with. For example, Pruitt did not possess great court-vision, apparent in his 0.9 assist per game averages and numerous offensive fouls he accumulated per game. Also, while a dominant force inside, Pruitt has not been able to correct his horrendous free-throw shooting (46.2%) to capitalize on the fouls he draws. But aside from these performance flaws, as most players have, Pruitts lack of commitment to defense was probably the final nail in the coffin for his time at Prostejov."

WOW. MOM. WOW.

The Illini Nation Invades Evanston

The Northwestern Mildcats have been completely baffling this year. They've roared to wins against #25 FSU, Minnesota, #9 MSU, and Wisconsin, but they lost to I.O.W.A. and were taken to the wire by Indiana (you know, the team that lost to Lipscomb). So what I am saying is, who the hell knows which Wildcat team will show up.

Kevin Coble is Northwestern's top player. He's averaging 15.2 points per game. When the sweet shooting Junior is on, the Cats are tough to beat, but NU has not won a game when Coble scores less than 10 points. Coble is a good match-up for Davis or JuCo Transfer Dominique Keller because they are both tall and can defend off the dribble.

Chester Frazier has been guarding the oppositions top scorer for most of the season, but his hands will be full against speedy sophomore Michael Thompson (10ppg, 4apg). Thompson will take you off the dribble and will finish or dish to an open man (hopefully not to Coble for 3).

On defense, the Cats play a tricked out match-up zone or a 1-3-1 (they also play man). Watch the way they switch and match-up when they play a 2-3. It is fascinating. When Illini Assistant Jay Price scouted NU for the first time, he watched an entire season's worth of tape, but couldn't figure out what they were doing - it almost drove him looney. We've had problems against their unorthodox but organized style in the past, however this year's team speciallizes in finding the open man. Zones typically have a weaknesses at the short corner and the hi-post. These are sweet spots for Davis and Tisdale. If the Mike's are shooting well, we will roll.

Illinois - 67
Cats - 59

Making Headlines

I made it onto the University of Illinois Athletic Site (http://www.fightingillini.com/). Check it out. I don't know what the ITA is, but I am definitely looking forward to it.

I don't mean to brag (OK, I do), but this is actually the second time I've made FightingIllini.com. The first time was back in 2001 when I was a senior playing on the women's basketball practice squad (http://fightingillini.cstv.com/sports/w-baskbl/spec-rel/101000aaa.html check the 3rd paragraph down). OK, stop laughing, I didn't wear a wig just to be a part of Illinois athletics. I came in every day with 5 other guys (except Sunday...or when coach was really pissed at the girls and wanted to lay into them) to learn the opposing team's plays and scrimmage the women to get them ready for their next game.

It was actually a ton of fun. I wore an Illinois practice uniform, I played ball every day, I got free shoes, and I was even registered as a student athlete. It turns out that I only have a few years of eligibility left. We got front row tickets to every women's' game, and Coach Grentz even promised to buy us Big10 Champion rings if they won conference (they didn't). Coach only had 2 rules...

1. Show up to practice on time.
2. Don't date any of my players. If you date any of my players I will kick you off the team so fast, that your butts will be back at IMPE before you blink.

She was really serious about rule #2. Some people laughed, but they actually had a pretty good looking team.

Illinois vs. Minnesota, eh

I took a road trip back to Champaign for Saturday's game with some of the fellas. During past seasons, it would be all but impossible to get tickets to a regular season, weekend match up against the Badgers. But after last year's 12-17 finish, a few Illini fans jumped off the band wagon. We were able to squeeze into the very last row of Assembly Hall.

Even from the nose bleeds, Illinois was putting on a show. Sophomore Guard Demetri McCamey was sensational, pouring in 25 points and dishing out 7 assists. He was all over the court, and I half expected him to come out and start flipping with the Jesse White Tumblers; which, as it turns out, McCamey was a member of when he was 8. DMac is by far our best slasher, and his growing grasp of the offense can be seen in his assist per game average that he is carrying during Big10 play - 6 (up from 4.5 apg before Big10 play).

Tonight, the Illini do battle against Tubby Smith and the Golden Gophers. In only his second season, Smith has lead the Gophers to a 17-3 record. They reached as high as 20 in the AP Poll after a big win against Louisville, but back-to-back losses against Northwestern and Purdue pushed the Gophers outside the AP and to #25 in the Coaches Poll. Smith has done such a great job at Minny, that he was rumored as a possible replacement at both Arizona and Alabama. He denied a connection yesterday saying, "I'm not looking for any jobs. We've got a great recruiting class coming here next year, so I'm excited about where the Gopher program is, and I'm not a candidate for any other jobs. "

Illinois has won 20 straight games against the Gophers (wow), and tonight, the Illini will extend this streak to 21. The Gopher's front line is a bit short, and I expect our big men to work the glass and to score in the post. Sophomore Center Mike Tisdale should have his way with the Gopher center by committee. NBA great Ralph Sampson's son is part the Gopher front line. His name is Ralph Sampson III check him out.

Illinois - 71

Minny - 60

Illinois vs. Wisky

Illini Game Preview
Saturday vs. Wisky @ 3 p.m.
Look for me on TV

Help a Brother Out

On Tuesday, I included in the header of the IGP that I would be in class during the OSU game, and I needed some text messages to keep up to speed on the score. I thought that I would be receiving texts every few minutes from my crazy Illini brothers...I received only 2! Not even a final score.

You guys let me down a bit Tuesday, but I am going to let you redeem yourselves. I am headed to Champaign tomorrow for the game. Where should I eat? Check out the poll in the left hand menu to vote for the best food in Champaign. If your favorite hangout isn't listed, add your suggestions to the comments at the end of this blog entry.

Press Passes

The IGP applied for a media pass for tomorrow's game against Wisky, but we were denied. Apparently, the Illini do not credential bloggers. I think that Head Coach Bruce Weber is a big fan of the IGP. So Bruce, if you're reading, send a few media passes my way.

Upside Down

The Big10 was turned on its head this Wednesday as a pair of teams with only 1 conference win each knocked off the first and second place squads. The Northwestern Mildcats led by Kevin Coble's 31 points, knocked off #7 MSU on the Spartans home turf, and the Iowa Hawkeyes topped Wisconsin in OT 73-69. A third of the way through the Big10 schedule, here is how they rack and stack...

It's wide open friends, and the Illini are poised for a run at the title.

Illinois vs. Wisky

The Illini are shooting a league leading 47.9% from the field and scoring the most of any team in the Big10 - 69.9 points a contest. A coworker from OSU said that he kept waiting for the Illini's hot shooting to cool down. "That's how this team plays," I told him. We can score from every spot on the court. But tomorrow, the Illini face the Badgers, as stingy a team defensively as there is in the Big10. We've dropped the last 5 games we've played against the Badgers, and I think it is time to start a little streak of our own.

Illinois - 62
Wisky - 59

Sincerely,
Mike Tisdale's 6000 Calorie Diet

PS...I was glad to see that Wayne McClain was voted the best dress coach at Illinois. Jerrance Howard is right on his tale, but he still has some tricks to learn from the master...Coach McClain.

Illinois vs. tOSU

Illini Game Preview
Illinois vs. tOSU
Tonight @ 6 p.m.
I will be in class. Please text me score updates.

Ranked

Despite going 1-1 last week, Illinois cracked the top 25 in both the AP and USA Today Coaches poll after a valiant road effort against Michigan State on Saturday. Illinois is now 15-3 and ranked 25th in the AP poll and 24th in the USA Today Coaches poll. I was hoping the Illini would go another week without being ranked. I like flying under the radar and the motivation Head Coach Bruce Weber can deliver with the "nobody thinks you guys are any good" speech.

Looking at the season to date, the Illini definitely deserve to be in the top 25. Two of our losses are to teams ranked in the top 10. Clemson is 16-1 and ranked #9 in country, while MSU is 15-2 and ranked number 7. Even Michigan was in the top 25 when we lost to them on the road.

Home Cooking

After getting an earful from the Izzone on Saturday, the Illini will be back in Champaign for both games this week. Tuesday is Paint the Hall Orange, and I really expect the Illini faithful to give tOSU a hard time today. I mean...not a hard time like this Clemson fan...but a hard time.

The Crush should get into the faces of the Buckeyes and be relentless with their insults, cheers, and obnoxious behavior. I mean...not actually in their faces like this goofy Providence fan...but figuratively get in their faces from a comfortable distance.

Friends, taunting your opponent is an art that these morons have not perfected. For example, earlier in the year when Georgia came to town, Georgia Guard Corey Butler decided to wear black athletic tights under his shorts. My taunting went a little something like this...

5 minutes in..."Hey, Corey, nice tights. Did you get those from your mother's drawer?"
10 minutes in..."Yo, Corey, I get a Victoria Secret catalog too. Except I don't actually order from it."
15 minutes in..."Hey, Corey, the women's game is next, are you going to play in that as well?"

My mom said to me, "Michael, what if he hears you?"
"Ma, that's the point. As the sixth man, it is my responsibility to take him out of his game."
"Well, what if comes into the stand after you?"
"I'll just point to Shomo."

Usually, a good way to gauge your taunting is by the reaction of the the fans around you. If you get a chuckle, your doing a good job. If they pull away and don't make contact, your a little out of hand.

tOSU

The Thad Matta led Buckeyes are looking sharper than expected this year sporting a 13-3 overall record and a 3-2 record in the Big10. They have a similar record and team makeup as the Illini. Their center is a 7 foot underclassman with a soft touch that makes him feel more at home on the perimeter, and their best player, Evan Turner, like our best player is a 2007 graduate of St. Joe's High School. Turner and Illini Guard Demetri McCamey made up one of the best high school back courts in the country in '07, and they were coached by Illinois legend Gene Pingatore (to learn more about Coach Ping, see the movie Hoop Dreams or ask Benny because Benny's fiance's, sister's, husbands, cousin's, son is Ping's 1st cousin).

tOSU plays a lot of zone, and the Illini have been great against zone this year. Sophomore Mike Davis is skilled enough to score and pass from the short corner or the high post (traditional weaknesses in any zone), and McCamey, Trent Meachum, and Alex Legion have proven to be legitimate threats from beyond the arc. The Illini back court will have to do better than the 1 for 17 shooting performance that was on displayed against MSU if they hope to win.

Illinois - 64
tOSU - 58

Sincerely,
Jerrance Howard's Sweater Vest

PS...Trent Meachum was voted by IGP readers as their favorite Illini walk-on in the past 5 years. A special consideration should go to Fred Nkemdi who was accidently left off the list but received 2 write in votes.

PPS...I've received a few requests for past IGPs. Check out the archive section at the bottom of the left hand menu to see all the IGPs from the historic 2004-05 season. I even included Brad Cohen's 'Missing IGP' for the National Championship Game.

Illinois vs. Fichigan

Illini Game Preview
Tonight vs. Fichigan
TBD. Propose destinations in the comments section.

It looks like karma has come around to bite the Loosiers in the ass. Sunday's 76-45 Illini victory was especially satisfying to rub in the faces of a few of my favorite Indiana fans. Below are 2 text message conversation that took place throughout the game.

Texting Mean Gene

Illini up 16-2

Me: Let's go IU. Gene, IU is looking sharp this year. I've never seen a YMCA team look so much like a Big10 powerhouse.

Gene: Congrats on beating a JV team.

Illini up 26-7 with 10 minutes left in the 1st half.

Me: Uh, Gene, there's 30 minutes left of basketball. Are you conceding defeat?

Gene: No response.

Illini up 58-29. Dominique Keller buries his 3rd three of the game and turns to smile at the Loosier bench.

Gene: Number 23 is an a$$hole!

Gene actually sent the last text message to Spitz because he didn't want to hear me razz him. I was watching the game from Spitz's couch and I laughed.

Texting Big Tony

Illini up 21-2

Me: Who. Who. Who. Whoosiers!

Tony: Yep, I got no response. This is embarrassing!

Me: Gene had a similar answer. It's not even fun to goof on you guys. Oh wait...you lost to Lipscomb!!!! HA!

Tony: Win or lose. The fact remains...Bruce Weber is a whiny b----...sorry, that is all I got...Your team is clearly better...I mean I had to look up Lipscomb on the Internet. In case you are wondering, it's in Iowa.

Fichigan

A crazy schedule quirk brings the Fichigan Wolverines to Assembly Hall only 1 week removed from our loss in Ann Arbor (is a whore). The first meeting was a terrific game with Fichigan going unconscious from 3-point land in the first half and pulling away by tightening up their defense in the 2nd half.

Manny Harris has impressed me so far as the best player in the Big10. He is averaging 19 points, 8 rebounds, and 5 assists per game. We put Chester Frazier on him last time, but Harris was able to post up the shorter defender and get to the front of the rim with ease. Our match-up will probably change this time around, but the help defense will be a huge factor in this game. Because Michigan was so spread out on offense, we did not have any shot blockers in the lane to help with penetration. This could be a good opportunity for Illinois to go zone during parts of the game, but I can only remember seeing Head Coach Bruce Weber use a zone one time in his career at Illinois.

We scored at will against Michigan use slip screens and pick-and-pops last time. This strategy should be effective again because Fichigan's defense is not disciplined enough for the Illini. A slip screen is like a pick and roll except the pick is faked and rolls early - think James Augustine. A pick-and-pop is like a pick and roll except instead of the roll the pick steps back for a shot - think Brian Cook. Mike Davis is skilled enough to do either, and I think he will blow up on the home court to avenge our only Big10 loss.

Illinois - 65
Fichigan - 60

Sincerely,
Bubba Chisholm

Illinois vs. Loosiers

Illini Game Preview
Tomorrow 2 p.m. @ Spitzer's
Let me know if you're going to make it.

There are many Illini b-ball shots that stick out in my mind over the years.

Cory Bradford's 3-pointer to knock of Indiana in the Big Ten Tourney.
Or Marcus Griffin's last second shot off an inbound against Wisky.
I went nuts over Roger Powell's tip dunk of his own shot against Louisville in the 2005 Final Four.
(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X9eiGQ-WBuQ - at 3:50)
There's Frank William's 3-pointer that defeated Michael Redd and the #13 Buckeyes.
Don't forget Luther's put back to beat Purdue in 2004.
You have Deron William's 3-ball to tie the score against Arizona.
And my personal favorite, Nick Anderson's 35 foot buzzer beater at Indiana. I remember watching that at Grandma's house.

I have a new favorite play that snuck into the top 5. Chester Frazier's dunk over 6'8" DeShawn Sims on Sunday was straight NASTY! I was lying on my couch, psyched by how fluid the Illini offense looked, when I saw Illinois grab a steal and Dimitri McCamey start the fast break. When McCamey dropped a bounce pass to Chet with Sims closing in, I thought Demetri was playing quarterback and leaving his wide receiver exposed in the middle of the field. Then Chester rose up and dunked with authority over a man 7 inches taller. I was shocked, and I nearly jumped out of my apartment. Unfortunately, I cannot find the video online. Anyone who has a link, please email the IGP or add it in the comments section of the blog.

Chester Frazier is by far the Illini's most improved player this year. In his first few seasons, Chester's offense was worse than the Sooners in the red zone last night. Not this year. Although he is the only starter not averaging double figures in points; he is averaging twice the assists he did last year (6.4 - 6th in the country), his assist/turnover ratio is 2x his ratio in 2007-2008 (3.0 - 18th in the country), and he is shooting a full 10% better from the field (45%). Frazier is a true floor leader who wants to be a coach when his playing days are over. Imagine a coaching staff of Jerrance Howard, Chester Frazier, and Dee Brown (All have indicated an interest in coaching. Side note: Sergio McClain is the Head Coach at Parkland Community College.).

A recent blog by Chester's high school coach tells the story of Frazier's recruitment process:

"Well, as I was watching Illinois upset Purdue the other night, I started thinking about what an inexact science recruiting is. Chester Frazier plays for Illinois and was fantastic against Purdue. He played for me when I was at Notre Dame Prep School. His entire recruitment by the University of Illinois lasted about an hour. The story goes like this…

"Five years ago, I received a phone call from Bruce Weber, who is the Head Coach at the University of Illinois (when Bruce was at Southern Illinois he had recruited one of my players so I knew him a little). He was in New Hampshire at one of the prep schools and was flying out of Boston the next day. He wanted to watch a kid that was playing for me workout, but his flight was at noon, so he wanted to know if we could work out in the morning. Now normally, I would not move a workout the evening prior, however Coach Weber is a good guy and he is the Head Coach at Illinois. Also, I felt a little bad for him because he did not like the player he went up to New Hampshire to see, and it was not going to get better for him at Notre Dame Prep – the player that he had heard about here was not good enough to play in the Big Ten. So, I moved our workout to seven the next morning. Bruce arrived at 6:30am just as my assistant coach, Mike McMahon, was turning on the lights.

"Just a little aside on Chester Frazier…He had been a good player for us at Notre Dame Prep. He could help win a game offensively and defensively. The thing I remember most was his toughness. He got injured in January and the doctor said he will be out for eight weeks. Four weeks later we were about toplay a big game, and Chester walked into my office and told me he wanted to play. I ask him what the doctor said, and he replied, “Who cares?” I then said, “Not me, the bus leaves at 3:00” (Oh relax, of course I checked with the doctor – I just can’t recall if it was before or after the game). Anyway Chester helped us win the game, and I have always thought that he is one of the toughest players in the country. Now, back to Coach Weber and 7:00am practice…

"The kids started playing, and I am telling you, Chester went off! He was sensational. He must have hit ten straight threes, was driving to the basket and finishing above the rim. He did it all. At about 8:00am, Bruce came over and asked if Chester plays like that all the time. I told him “Why, yes. Every 7:00am practice with a Big Ten coach in the gym, yes, he does play like that.” At about 8:15am, Bruce told me he was going to offer Chester a scholarship. Bruce visited again the next week and Chester, once again, did not disappoint. The rest, as they say, is history. Currently, Chester is a senior at Illinois, and he has been a good player for them for four years. Yes, a coach flew out to New England to see a kid that didn’t work out, so on his way to the airport, he stopped in to a hastily arranged workout to watch yet another kid he had heard about, and ends up offering a scholarship to a third kid – Chester Frazier, a player he had never heard of before that day. Recruiting is a crazy business. I have seen coaches spend two years recruiting a kid, pour their heart and soul into it, and then not get him. Then there are stories like Chester’s – I love stories like this one, don’t you?"

The full story can be read at http://collegechalktalk.com/general/assoc-head-coach-bill-barton-duquesne-recruiting-an-inexact-science/

Chester is a special player and a tough kid. Let's be sure to cheer extra hard for Chet during his senior year.

Illinois vs. The Big 1o Team Who Lost to Lipscomb (TB10TWLTL)

TB10TWLTL is 5-9 this year and 0-2 in the Big10. In a previous blog I mentioned that TB10TWLTL would not win a conference game all year, but TB10TWLTL surprised me last week by playing Michigan to the wire. They lost 72-66 in OT. Still...they lost to Lipscomb. Lipscomb for crying out loud. Devan Dumes and Tom Pritchard are the only players for TB10TWLTL averaging in double figures. Dumes is good off the bounce, and we saw what dribble penetration did against Illinois in the 2nd half against Fichigan. Our help defense will have to be better. Don't get me wrong, I am not too worried about TB10TWLTL, I am just making a point about our defense to better educate the IGP audience.

Our front line should have a field day against Indiana's small and inexperienced forwards (all but 1 are freshman). One of the Mike's (Davis or Tisdale) will go for 20 and the other will hit a double-double. Welcome to the Big10 Tom Crean.

Illinois - 76
TB10TWLTL -59

Sincerely,

The Former TCU Horned Frogs Offensive Coordinator

PS...Thanks for naming the IGP as the pre-conference Illini MVP - 42% of the vote.
